Oliver Brown; b. Feb 09, 1760 in Stonington; d. Jun 05, 1845 in Concord, Ohio; m. (1) Nov 02, 1778 in Stonington, by the Reverend Nathaniel Eells of the First Congregational Church, to Mrs. Grace (Gregory) Welch; b. 1755 in England; d. Dec 14, 1832 in Concord. Her first husband died on the seas in the English service. Oliver and Grace went from Stonington to Norwich, CT; removed to Genessee County, NY; and in 1818, made the journey by ox team to Concord Township, Lake County, Ohio, where they settled and built a log cabin home. Oliver Brown was in the Revolutionary War; enlisted May 26, 1777 at Stonington; served in a company commanded by Captain Ebenezer Winter in a regiment of the First Connecticut Line. He was at the battles of New York and Brunswick, hospitalized for a shot in the leg; fought at Brandywine, Germantown and Valley Forge. On one night of his watch, he halted General Washington, who returned to camp without giving the proper password. Brown marched the General to the guardhouse, and was given a commendation for carrying out his proper duties by Washington himself. Oliver Brown applied for a Revolutionary War Pension (#14518 issued Sep 21, 1818), and received $8.00 per month.
